The goal of this class is to provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a handgun. Lessons included in this course will be an Introduction to Firearm Safety, Parts and Operation, Ammunition, The Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting, Cleaning, Storage, and Training Opportunities.



Class Length: Approximately 2 hours.
Classroom Materials Required: All training materials will be provided.
Range Materials: Firearm Rental, Eye Protection and Ammunition will be included in the cost of this course.

Traditional firearms is based on the lowest-form of training: static targets. We began working with non-lethal rounds on focus mitts several years ago and it has evolved into a dynamic training system we call Movement Integrated Tactical Training System (M.I.T.T.S.). Combined with sparring, the development of each individual truly takes training to the level of a martial art. From individual training to group training, we have everything you need to develop beyond a “shooter” to a true gunfighter.

Course Objectives

Learn gun safety! Understand ballistics, types of pistols, proper grip, sight picture, loading, unloading, safe firearm ownership and shoot multiple handguns from sub sub compacts to full size handguns.

We will start the class in the education room talking about gun safety; the most important aspect of owning a firearm. We will then work on proper grip with a revolver and semi-automatic (different grips are used for revolver and semi auto) using blue guns (dummy guns), work on proper sight picture with an unloaded firearm, work with snap caps (inert rounds) with revolver and semi auto (loading, unloading, making safe).

We will supply the guns, ammunition, targets, eye and ear protection and range time for the class.

Description:

Defense in low light environments involves unique considerations such as understanding illumination, choosing the correct light, and developing shooting techniques that incorporate light activation and control. This course is designed for armed citizens interested in increasing their effectiveness inside and outside the home. Our Low Light Techniques class is conducted on an indoor range where the environment can be controlled and covers weapons mounted and handheld illumination techniques.

Must have:

A good quality, high capacity semi – automatic handgun
At least 3 magazines
Weapons mounted light
Ejection molded/Kydex light bearing holster
Magazine pouch
Handheld tactical flashlight (i.e. Streamlight, Surefire, etc.)
300-400 rounds of reliable target ammunition (no steel core)

Description:

This class is perfect for new shooters, lapsed shooters who want to refresh their knowledge, or more frequent shooters who want to refresh their skill and try a new technique. Shooters will have the opportunity to qualify for their Concealed Carry License if desired, or can just familiarize themselves with the principles of handgun use/safety and try out several different calibers.

Class includes 3 hours of classroom time followed by 1-2 hours of range time.

Content includes:

Basics of safe gun handling;
Proper technique for grip, slide racking, magazine loading, target shooting, basic personal defense;
Various types of handguns -- advantages and disadvantages of each;
Different types of ammunition;
Storage of a firearm;
How to shoot a handgun;
Selecting the right handgun for your needs.

Class is only $50. For our range shooting, we focus on techniques taught by six-time world champion Rob Leatham for personal defense. This is a basic tactical class...not a target shooting class.

12 students per class, maximum. The class is geared toward male or female shooters and is taught by the Author of The Handgun Guide for Women. Books will be available for sale the day of the class.

Guns available to rent include: .22, .380, 9 mm, .40 and .45. Rental is covered in the class fee, but you WILL need to buy ammo if you are renting a gun...and you will need to BRING ammo if you are bringing your own gun.

If you are bringing your own gun to shoot and/or qualify for a CCL with, please bring 50 rounds of ammunition.
If you plan to try out a gun, ammunition will be available for sale the day of the class. If you have "eyes and ears" (shooting glasses and ear muffs), please bring them.

Doug’s First Steps classes are held Thursday evenings from 6-10 PM. The class teaches the fundamentals of gun safety and marksmanship. It is a great beginner class but experienced shooters will learn something also. Many couples take this class together. After a discussion about firearm safety and function, the instructor discusses the shooters grip, stance, sight picture, target acquisition and trigger pull. Students then visit the shooting range with the instructor to apply the principles taught. When you leave this class you will have the fundamental knowledge that, when combined with practice, will allow you to shoot more accurately than you ever have.
